📸 The photo that got me started with stock photography...

Reader, I've recently been talking a lot about stock photography, and I also released a new downloadable ebook called "Earning a Side Income with Stock Photography" that, as the name suggests, helps photographers earn a side income with their photos.

Taking that first step may feel intimidating. Maybe you think your photos are nowhere near good enough to start earning money with them, so today I'm going to prove to you otherwise. This was the photo that started my ball rolling:

I took it shortly after purchasing my first "big" camera. There's very little right with it, but the stock photography agency that I submitted it to accepted it - and over the years, their clients purchased the license to use it in their projects several times. I'm not saying you can submit any old photo and it will be accepted; instead, I want to suggest there are likely tons of photos in your archives you're underestimating that could already be earning you money. The agencies in 2026 are no longer hoping for "perfect"; instead, they are focused on images that stand out and look interesting.

If you feel tempted to start earning a side income with the photos that are currently gathering dust in your archives, then check out the guide:

If you're not sure what stock photography is, you can learn more in this blog post.

Best wishes

Dawn xx

Reader! People are truly great photography subjects, and I’m not talking about classical portraits. Look at the following images that include people. You'll notice that they are used to give the image an element of interest: Find a cool setting and wait for someone to walk through the scene. People with dark or colourful clothing are the best models, but it really depends on the setting. Also, look for people with umbrellas. Keep your eyes open when you’re out and about with your camera for...

Reader I hear it all the time: “My boss asked me to take photos at an event he’s hosting”. “My neighbour asked me to take photos of her for her website”. “A friend of one of my friend’s friends is getting married, and they’re looking for a (cheap) photographer”. As soon as people begin acknowledging you as a photographer, they’ll be contacting you, wanting you to take photos of them. Feel flattered. People are acknowledging you as a photographer. You obviously seem able to get your camera to...
